Investigation into a practical approach and application of cotton fiber elongation

Abstract Background The strength of cotton fiber has been extensively studied and significantly improved through selective breeding, but elongation largely ignored, even though contributes to determining the energy needed break fibers. Recent developments calibrate high volume instrument (HVI) for renewed interest in elongation. However, it is not understood how best utilize yet another property which potential add complexity selection. To explore a practical approach applying elongation, samples were tested using single methods, Stelometer, HVI. Comparison strength, combined properties such as modulus explored. Results HVI testing was shown be sensitive enough characterize differences unlike unable capture within-sample variation. Fiber bundle testing, like Stelometer reduce bias due Conclusion use secant modulus, an intrinsic material property, allowed one value represent both Secant contain more useful information than either or work-to-break. Work-to-break influenced by specific breaking force rather behavior sample being tested.
